introduction
Support to a global research facility to cut the carbon emissions of the goods and services they purchase with new policies, tools and strategies – while ensuring implementation was compliant to global public sector buying and operational practices
Business Challenge
Client expressed their vision of becoming a role model as an environmentally aware global research laboratory.
Our solution
This global public sector research facility sought to become a world leader in environmental responsibility, but faced a massive challenge: 64% of their 450,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions were tied directly to the £438 million of goods and services purchased from their supply chain. With their 70-strong procurement team focused solely on standard sourcing and compliance, they urgently required expert, external support. The goal was to fully embed a responsible environmental procurement policy into their organisation and supply chain, all while strictly adhering to global public sector purchasing regulations and operational controls.
Undertook a materiality assessment to identify all key ESG areas and create a roadmap of target areas from highest to lowest impact and priority.
Undertook a Procurement, Operations and HSE team capability diagnostic to identify current understanding and maturity on sustainability topics, using ISO20400 as a guiding framework for questions and outputs.
Focused review and enhancement of client current procurement skills, systems, policies and process.
Combination of face-to-face workshops and Teams sessions, especially with category managers.
Identification of areas of clients’ supply chain where positive changes could be made to cut carbon emissions, reduce costs or create innovation.
Review of external ESG best practice measurement tools to competitively select and negotiate the right fit system for the clients’ needs. Implementation of tool and management of supplier performance and costs.
Update of client’s wider procurement policies and processes to seamlessly embed the new environmentally responsible procurement policy and processes.
Training programme designed for team and individuals to support academic and on the job learning.
Ongoing support provided to collaborate with category managers to review wave plan of categories to seek out and deliver decarbonisation strategies.
Recalculation of client carbon emissions to ensure an accurate baseline.
